25 countries, regions restrict food imports from Japan over radiation fears › Japan Today

At least 25 countries and regions have restricted imports of farm and other food products from Japan in response to leaks of radioactive substances from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant crippled by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, the government said Monday.

The restrictions on food imports from Japan have been expanding, while the government has asked foreign countries to comply with the World Trade Organization rules that prohibit member countries from imposing import restrictions that have no scientific ground.

All things equal, I would guess consumers would not desire to eat food that’s from a region experiencing low radioactive fallout — especially when alternatives are available. Yet the government is stepping and deciding this for them.

I have heard from some that a lot of this food is very safe, and you can help the farmers to rebuild by eating it. Hm. The truth is TEPCO should be responsible for decreases in sales and unsold food. They will be to a certain extent, but not nearly enough.

Again, these are costs of nuclear energy that get subsidized via the government
