Education problem:
  • 2007/06/19 Parents from hell give schools a hard time, the Yomiuri Shimbun; "Public primary and middle schools and boards of education across the country are agonizing over how to deal with parents who make unreasonable requests and complaints, according to the findings of a Yomiuri Shimbun survey."
Here are some of the complaints cited in the article:
  • If my child doesn't clean up at home, why should they have to do it at school.
  • Please transfer that student because my child doesn't get along with him (or her).
  • Don't mentally assault my child by giving him (or her) homework he can't keep up with.
  • Why didn't you give my child proper guidance after he (or she) caused the bicycle accident?
  • etc.

So what is the solution. The article states:
The second report compiled by the government's Education Rebuilding Council also pointed out the need to establish teams of experts to address the problem, bringing to light the fact that how to deal with such parents has become a problem for schools.
The complaints are regarded by the authorities as being those of overindulgent parents. Maybe. Maybe not. The problem is with a national centralized education system. Make it easier to start private schools and give local areas more control and more responsibility. Hm, which door would you choose: Door #1: Empower people to be able to take action in their local communities by giving them more responsibility for what the schools teach. Let local officials decide the curriculum, and let people vote on those officials. Door #2: Belittle their complaints, then form an expert committee in Tokyo to determine how to deal with such foolish parents. Is it really such a tough choice? 日本語のキーワッド: 教育問題

Rough on the teachers, but

Rough on the teachers, but who I really feel for is those kids. Remember how mortified you could be in middle school when your parents made a perfectly legitimate complaint? Imagine if your Mom was on the phone for six hours, implying she had yakuza buddies, because she'd spoiled you at home and you were being asked to clean at school.
